Annual Meeting and Luncheon

November 13

Please plan to join your fellow members Saturday, November 13 for our annual luncheon meeting and presentation. Following lunch, there’ll be a brief Annual Meeting. Last year, all of our officers agreed to serve new 2-year terms, so no election will be held.

After the meeting, Deborah Walsh, RN, will describe her experiences in Haiti. This year our Pig Roast had a charitable purpose: to raise funds to help the people of Haiti recover from the devastating earthquake that struck the island in January 2010. Proceeds went to the Vermont Haiti Project, a volunteer organization that puts 100% of donations received to work on basic projects, such as building and placing small water distillation units so that clean water is available to prevent occurrence of water-borne diseases such as cholera.

Since the earthquake, many other groups and individuals have pitched in to help Haiti begin to recover, and one such individual is this year’s Annual Meeting speaker: Deborah Walsh, RN, from Nottingham NH. In April, Debbie traveled with a team of nurses mostly from Elliott Hospital in Manchester to Port au Prince. There she used her special skills as a trauma nurse, and donated her time and money to helping treat the sick and injured, as a member of the team. Debbie’s stories and photographs will show you what it was like there, and also show you what can be done when individuals step up to help others in need.

Please plan to join your fellow members Saturday, November 13 for this interesting event.

Bring a dish / share a dish. Bring your folding chairs, too. If time allows, a scenic caravan ride could be arranged (foliage has already begun there). At any rate, you’ll have a bit of a foliage tour from your house to Newfield. Rain date will be Sunday, the 19th. Please join us for a relaxing day in Southwestern Maine - "if you lived here you'd be home by now"! More details later, so check in here and watch your mail/email. See you there!?

American Precision Museum, and Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site, Cornish NH

Luncheon, Tour, and Concert

August 22:  We started the day at 10:00 AM with a visit to the American Precision Museum in Windsor VT to see the exhibit Yankee Ingenuity and the Road to Mass Production. This exhibit celebrates the 2008 centennial of the Model T Ford and explores how the tools and techniques of precision manufacturing made mass production possible. This was be followed by lunch at the new Common Man restaurant in Claremont, NH.

Then we visited  the beautiful home, studios and gardens of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, one of America’s greatest sculptors. Over 100 of his artworks can be seen in the galleries, from heroic public monuments to expressive portrait reliefs, and the gold coins which changed the look of American coinage. Enjoy summer concerts, explore nature trails, or indulge your hidden talents during a sculpture class. Throughout the summer and fall, visitors can enjoy a profusion of flowers in the site's gardens. The formal terraced garden with its period plantings, is set off with gilded casts of ancient sculptures, much like what Saint-Gaudens saw in Europe. The cutting garden offers a wide variety of flowers grown for the elegant floral arrangements found in the galleries.

The Concert featured the North Country Chamber Players,   “Amy Beach in Words and Music” with N.H Poet Marie Harris

We’ll have a club booth with a couple of tents (the car show will take place rain or shine). When you arrive at the show grounds, look for our tents near the registration tent.

The car show is a separate enterprise from the Castle, and is using the entrance to the Castle Springs Bottling Plant, Ossipee Park Rd. off of Rte. 171, Moultonborough NH, north of the main entrance to the castle. If you’d like to show your car, you may register online at http://www.castlecarshow.com. The show will be open to the public from 10-4. Enter through the show entrance so that they can extract the admission fee: $5 per car. Use the Castle directions below to locate the neighborhood, then find Ossipee Park Road (or follow show signs),

Manchester VT Car Show (A.K.A. Hildene)

Our section will be attended the 24th annual Manchester VT Antique and Classic Car Show, which takes place June 12th and 13th. This year, for the first time, there’s a class for Mercedes in the show. Call the Chamber of Commerce at 800-362-4144 or see the show website http://www.manchestercarshow.com for specifics, schedules, and other info. You can buy your show tickets on the web or at the gate. Many of the hotels and motels in the area require two nights’ lodging, but there’s a great deal to do in the Manchester area, and this is the best time to be there (crowds are at a minimum, but everything’s open). There’s the Robert Todd Lincoln estate Hildene (replete with Mr. Lincoln’s private astronomical observatory), Mt. Equinox, outlet shopping, driving tours, etc.

Saturday during the day, the club had a booth in the vendor area, spaces 38 and 39, with room for members to get together in the shade. Please make a point of coming by; we’d love to see you. Later in the day, members Jesse and Janet Torregrossa have invited us to their East Dorset home for wine and cheese at 5, and after that we’ll have dinner together at the Barrows House Inn in Dorset (route 30, north of Manchester).

Sound like fun? Don’t delay; make your reservation today! If you need lodging, reserve right away (today’s good, because this popular show fills hotels fast). The show website has a link to local lodging. Plan to arrive Friday night. A few rooms are available at the Chalet Motel http://www.thechaletmotel.com, and several of our members have already reserved there.

If you’re coming from afar on Friday, bring a dish for a potluck picnic. We’ll provide plates, cups, cutlery, etc. This’ll give us an extra chance to meet (and help a bit with high meal costs in the area). PLEASE let me know soon if you’re coming (DOTTIL61@ALUMNI.BATES.EDU or by phone at 603.236.8176). I need a count for the dinner reservation. After you notify me I’ll be able to give you directions to the picnic and to the Torregrossas’ home.

August 25,

A to Z Auto Collection and Tour

One of our section members,  Lee Spencer lives, near the owner of the “A to Z” collection, a unique selection of cars, one with each first initial up to Y (Yellow Cab), and has been working with me and the cars’ owner on arrangements for a visit and other events for the day. The  owner is getting on in years, and he lost his wife recently. Therefore, Lee thought this was the year if we want to see this unique assemblage.  The first car acquired was a1930 Cadillac V-16 Roadster, then an AC Buckland Tourer, then his first antique, a 1911 Brasier Runabout.  At this point, his wife suggested he might be starting to fill out the alphabet, and so they did.

Tentatively, we’ll meet at Lee and Shirley’s camping park in Chocorua, then tour through Tamworth and up to Sandwich for lunch at a restaurant (the Corner House), then back to Chocorua to see the cars.

We’re planning  something a bit different- an event in Canada, centering around a winery in the beautiful Quebec countryside southeast of Montreal. You’ll need to have a valid US Passport (to get back IN to the US). Our Canadian member, Klaus Bremer has arranged a special early autumn trip to the Eastern Townships wine-growing region.

The dates will be 7-9 September, and the destination is the picturesque Town of Brome Lake, which is just over the border from Vermont in Quebec. Day-tripping will be possible for northern Vermonters, but some rooms are available at the Auberge Knowlton in Lake Brome for those further away. See their website at http://www.aubergeknowlton.ca/indexE.php. E-mail for reservations: mailto:info@aubergeknowlton.ca 450-242-6886

Room rates are $ 125.00 for two (2) including breakfast. Taxes extra.
The Auberge is pet friendly. Smoking only outside.

There will be a group visit to the Brome County Museum at 10:00 am Saturday. The group rate is $ 3.00 per person. Of special interest is a WW1 Fokker fighter plane, one of only two or three in original condition.” You can see information about the museum at http://www.bromemuseum.com

The highlight of the trip will occur Saturday afternoon, when we’ll visit Henrietta Antony's fabulous Vineyard in Glen Sutton at 1:30 PM. Go to http://www.vinedeglace.com/vineyard.htm to see images. (You may have to copy and paste the link into your browser).  It looks like a marvelous place. Klaus has secured a group rate of $27 for the visit and tasting.

Saturday night, there’ll be a dinner at the Auberge. Click here for the menu:   Auberge Knowlton Menu

Holloway Greenland Anniversary Celebration

All members of Northern New England Star section have been invited to an open house and special celebration of Paul Holloway's 40 years as a Mercedes dealer. From 11 AM to 3 there will be special events at the dealership (393 Portsmouth St, Greenland NH) in honor of the occasion. Our members will have a separate parking area to help us find each other. As a Club event, there'll be an optional coastal tour in the area as well, since it's silly to drive all the way to the Seacoast without a glimpse of the sea. We'll circulate around historic New Castle, past revolutionary Fort Constitution, around Odiorne Point, thence down the shore through Rye and end up at Hampton Beach's newly renovated waterfront. For a bite before returning home, there’ll be lunch at a restaurant at Hampton. Doesn't this sound like fun?

Plan to arrive at the dealership in the 11-11:30 time range, and you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy the festivities and tour the “store”. Then around 1 PM, get together with Drew and Claudia and assemble for the tour if you wish. Drew will need to know who’ll be in the “train”. The ocean is quite close to the dealership, and there’s a lovely slice of shore to see (weather permitting, of course). The culmination of the tour will be quite close to NH Route 101, which should allow you an easy access to your way home.

Northern New England Star Section Annual Meeting This year, our annual meeting will celebrate our section’s 35th year.

Speakers will include founders Chuck Swanson, Jamie Towle, and Bob Smith, and their recollections and images from our founding will enliven the afternoon. The location will be Concord, NH, at the Centennial Hotel’s Franklin Pierce room. The hotel is very easy to locate, situated as it is on US Route 202 (96 Pleasant St.) in downtown Concord. There’s parking behind the hotel. The luncheon will consist of:

APPETIZER:
New England Clam Chowder
House Salad

ENTREES:
Granite Burger
Roast Turkey Club
Roast Beef Melt
Granite Caesar

DESSERT:
Assorted Cookies

Tea/coffee/decaf

The term “Granite” in the above refers to the Granite restaurant, on premises; the food is not made from granite.

Since the club will pay a generous share, your lunch will come to $11.62 (an $8 subsidy will be handed out to each diner).

Please make your reservation with me before 11/13/12, along with your food orders. If you have special dietary requirements, they will be accommodated; please let me know.

Northern New England Star Section 2012 Holiday Party

Let’s get together for a holiday party! Sunday, December 16, come to Wolfeboro NH early and enjoy the town, then join your fellow MBCA members for a potluck feast at Wolfeboro Corinthian Yacht Club’s function room on North Main Street (downhill from the Wolfeboro Inn next door). Wolfeboro is a very popular destination all year round, but parking near the shops is easier in Winter.

Wolfeboro Corinthian (WCYC) has a sign at the end of the drive (Nancy’s Way) on Main Street on the water (west) side. Drive in and go partway down the hill. The Clubhouse is the large building on the left at the bottom of the hill. Enter the club room via the deck (entrance is at about mid-hill).

The club has a kitchen complete with range and microwave, so foods you bring can be heated/cooked as needed. The club has plenty of parking, too, although you may have to make your way around boats stored outside.

An added attraction: the Wright Museum, which many of us visited last year, is celebrating a Festival of Trees for the fourteenth year. This festival is an annual charity benefit featuring more than sixty-five trees, uniquely decorated by area businesses and organizations, and displayed on two levels at the Wright museum. Admission costs $5, and proceeds are going to a local food bank. In addition to the trees, the exhibit features continuous entertainment. For 12/16 the schedule of entertainment is:

noon

Kitchin' Pickers - acoustic country and bluegrass

1 pm

Holly Simons - vocal and keyboard

2 pm

Kitchin' Pickers - acoustic country and bluegrass

The Museum is open from 12-4 on the 16th, plenty of time to see the trees. The address of the Wright Museum is 77 Center Street (Routes 109 and 28), Wolfeboro.

To celebrate the season, our party will benefit the NH Food Bank with cash donations. The Food Bank has much more purchasing power than most individuals, and they know their needs better than we can guess. All donations are tax-deductible. Can’t come to the party, but desire to donate? Send me your check made out to NH Food Bank with your name and address, and I’ll make sure it gets to the Food Bank with your correct info.

About food: We’ll get together at the Club at 2 PM if not before. We Larssons will be there earlier to set up. Before you go out to see Wolfeboro, feel free to bring your contributions into the kitchen, where they can be kept at the appropriate temperature. It’s a late lunch, so bring lunch-type food to share (stew, or salad, or your specialty). We’ll have a warm pot of Wassail (non-alcoholic), tea, coffee, etc. Please coordinate food with me so that we can have a somewhat balanced meal.
